1. Always make a list!
This is always a good idea because with a prepared list you are much less likely to be tempted to buy things you do not need. It also helps if you make a meal plan for the week, that way you know what you do not have at home, and what you will need when you go to the store. Make a list of these items, and stick to it!
2. Bulk buy
When items hit a low price, stock up. When non-perishable foods like pasta or canned or tinned foods are on sale, it’s best to buy enough in bulk to cover the next two or three months. Of course, you should also be mindful of expiry dates! You can also buy from wholesalers for a lower price.
3. Cut your own fruits!
Seriously, it might not seem like a big deal but have you ever noticed how pre-cut fruits are more expensive? They’re also much less than if you buy the whole fruit! Buy fruits that are in season and cut it at home to save money. It also cuts back on plastic use which is great for the environment.
4. Grocery shop without your children
We all know that kids tend to add items to your basket that you would not have necessarily bought otherwise! It might sound harsh, but if you are able, try to shop alone so it’s easier to stick to your list so you can save cost on unnecessary items.
5. Grow at home!
If possible, try growing your own produce at home. Not only is organic healthier, but it will prove cheaper in the long run! It might even be a fun family activity and a learning opportunity for children.
