Check for fire hazards
People can sometimes be absent-minded when in a holiday mode, but always double check your house before you leave. A 10- minute thorough check can make all the difference in preventing fire incidences. Faulty electrical appliances are common causes of fire in the house.
- Unplug unessential electrical appliances from the socket, especially TVs, laptops, microwaves, iron, washing machines, kettles, lamps, phone chargers and other devices which do not require electricity.
- Turn off your LPG cylinder.
- Although not necessarily a fire hazard, but a financial one – check that you have switched off all lights before leaving.
Flood-proof the house
Coming back from a great holiday to a flooded home is a costly nightmare you want to avoid. Water damage can affect your walls, furniture and can leave a lingering damp smell in the house.
- Turn off the water outlet connecting to your washing machine.
- Inspect your water pipes and water tank before leaving.
- If you are certain there might be heavy rainfall, sandbag doorways and entrances.
- Clear the drainage close to your home.
- Double check that you have turned off all taps.
Keep your house safe from burglary
Unfortunately, once you leave your home for a period of time, your house can become a target for burglary. There are simple things you can do to keep your house safe, as well as long term ones.
- Install a security system in your home, along with burglars bars.
- Ask a close family or friend to house sit for you.
- Inform a trusted neighbour of your absence and kindly ask if they can keep an eye out for you.
- Lock all your doors and ensure all windows are closed.
- Fix any loose locks or windows before leaving.
